'Open Secret' - October 17th, 2025

the third (and 2nd in 2025) nightshades record

‘Open Secret’, the third full-length album from nightshades, arrives as the spacious counterpart to 2025’s earlier release, 'Inside Joke'. While ‘Inside Joke’, with its tightly packed and dark arrangements, saw the BC collaborative art rock band maintain a frenetic pace, 'Open Secret' takes time to exhale: expansive, atmospheric, and effortlessly melodic. The same four minds - Andrew Judah, Common Fires, DL Ranney, and N. Sherman - return to trade instruments, voices, and instincts in constant rotation, blurring authorship and showcasing the band at ease with their genre-fluidity.

At times, ‘Open Secret’ becomes mischievous and old-school in its melodic turns (‘Cursed’, ‘A Minute’), drifting between emotive synth landscapes (‘Open Secret’, ‘Leaves’) and wide-open acid rock arrangements (‘Carrier Pigeon’, ‘Red & Orange’). Moments of coquettish detachment (‘No Spooky’, ‘Slickers’) exist in direct contrast to striking vulnerability (‘Okay’, ‘Ghost’), presenting ‘Open Secret’s diverse musical influences as a series of warm, confident vignettes.

'Open Secret' - performed by nightshades, and produced by Andrew Judah - is out October 17th, 2025.

'Inside Joke' - July 7th, 2025

nightshades' second full-length album

Nightshades’ second full-length album, ‘Inside Joke’ represents a natural and dramatic evolution for British Columbia’s genre-defying “super-group”. Following last year’s shimmering debut album ‘Reducer’, the four-piece (Andrew Judah, Common Fires, DL Ranney, N. Sherman) pivot into multi-pronged musical exploration: pairing patented instrumental intricacy and harmony with an increased sense of urgency and deeply expressive groove. From the post-punk, barn-burning intensity of ‘Kill the Gods’, ‘Echosound’, and ‘Animal’, to the needle-drop snappiness of ‘Orpheus’, ‘Apology’, and ‘See That Bear’, ‘Inside Joke’ contorts itself into diverse shapes with impossible fluidity and confidence.

With ‘Inside Joke’, nightshades celebrates two and a half years together. Despite their discography now showcasing 37 total songs, to use the word “prolific” would do the instrument-swapping quartet a disservice: ‘Inside Joke’ is not just the latest storied chapter in nightshades’ short history—it is Canada’s most-undefineable band moving forward beyond self-discovery and stepping into true creative actualization.

‘Inside Joke’—performed by nightshades, and produced by Andrew Judah—is out July 9th, 2025.

MORE

nightshades (the band)

BC's least definable, most dynamic band

nightshades is a collaborative indie rock band, featuring four esteemed Canadian songwriters (Andrew Judah, Common Fires, DL Ranney, and N.Sherman). In a Beatles-esque timeshare of genre-defying, vibrant music; nightshades' sound is rich with diverse music exploration, but anchored by melodic hooks and irresistible rhythmic flourish.

With all four members swapping vocal and instrumental duties, nightshades' live show is both visually and sonically dynamic. Complementary (but distinct) timbres, abilities, and songwriting styles blend on-stage in real-time: nightshades assembles a jigsaw puzzle of talent in front of their audience with every performance.

Since the band's inception in early 2023, nightshades has released three full-length records (2025’s ‘Inside Joke’ + 'Open Secret', and 2024's ‘Reducer’), and three EPs ('It's Not Weird', 'Yellow and Green', and 'Very Good Friend').

nightshades - 'Very Good Friend'

March 21st, 2025

nightshades—the vocalist-switching, instrument-trading, genreless “rock” band—has existed for less than two years, but has already released two EPs (‘It’s Not Weird’, ‘Yellow & Green’) and one full-length record (‘Reducer’) before March 2025’s EP release of ‘Very Good Friend’.

Between each release, nightshades has been playing live shows and developing their future identity. With eyes to their future work, the genre-confounding ‘super-group’ realized there were five songs from their early live sets that would disappear from collective memory if they weren’t immortalized in recorded form.

Thus, ‘Very Good Friend’ was recorded in the autumn of 2024 at the band’s studio - a scrapbook page of early nightshades' live shows, dedicated to the friends who have made the past two years so special.

nightshades - 'Reducer'

May 31st, 2024

‘Reducer', nightshades’ debut full-length record (May 31st, 2024), is a kaleidoscopic and diverse collection of songs recorded live-off-the-floor at the band's Kelowna, BC studio. With each member of nightshades (Andrew Judah, Common Fires, DL Ranney, N. Sherman) trading vocal and instrumental duties throughout the album’s ten songs, ‘Reducer’ is a calculated balancing act of deliberate eclecticism: an ambitious high-wire performance of both heart and mind.

An album of high contrast, 'Reducer' intends to surprise, thrill, and comfort its listeners. Certain tracks burst into vivid colour (‘2 Actors’, ‘Leave Space’, ‘Routine Blood Work’); other songs simmer with introspective reverie (‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Harsh Mellow’, ‘Suggestions?’). Warm synths swaddle the angular guitar-work, slinky bass lines cozy up with groovy drumming, and spacious vocal performances blossom into striking four-part harmony.

'Reducer’—performed by nightshades, and produced by Andrew Judah—was released May 31st, 2024.

nightshades - 'Yellow and Green'

November 1st, 2023

In the winter of 2023, nightshades (Andrew Judah, N. Sherman, Common Fires, DL Ranney) holed up in a BC cabin to record early live-show favourites and write new songs alike. What emerged was an EP of firsts: songs were quickly written with all four members contributing, and each of the tracks were recorded live-off-the-floor in single takes.

'Maybe I Will', the band's opening song throughout their gigs in 2023, finally arrives in recorded form. Brand new material written on the recording trip, 'The Out' and 'Nervous Ghosts', represent nightshades' future in collaborative songwriting. 'Get Over' energetically repurposes solo project material.

Featuring all four members of BC's modest, yet-still "super group", 'Yellow and Green' both highlights each musician's individual abilities, and demonstrates their increasing musical chemistry with one another.
